Our Purpose, Mission & Goals
The Mercer Island Sister City Association is a nonprofit, community-based organization promoting educational, cultural and other exchanges between the citizens of Thonon-les-Bains, France and Mercer Island, WA.
The Mercer Island – Thonon-les-Bains relationship was founded in 2000 and is an association composed of individuals and organizations interested in promoting close ties between both cities.
This nonprofit corporation is founded for education, cultural and charitable purposes to promote international understanding between nations of the world through the establishment of Sister City relationship(s).
Our mission is to create opportunities for citizens and organizations of Mercer Island to experience and explore other cultures through long-term friendships, partnerships, programs and formal city to city relations.
Our goals are to advance educational, cultural and other relationships between Mercer Island, Washington and Thonon-les-Bains, France. Through our programs and projects, we promote French and American interaction via language use opportunities, fine and literary arts, culinary arts, cinema, tourism, and history. Our programs and projects, although open to all, are primarily focused on Mercer Island youths and adults.
It is also our goal to inform and educate the public about the character and attributes of our specific sister cities, as well as about the value and meaning fo the broader international sister city movement.
